MULTILINGUALISM AND THE ROLE OF TRANSLATION IN KNOWLEDGE GLOBALISATION
The Summer School Multilingualism and Role of Translation in Knowledge Globalisation took place on 14–23 August 2018 at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU), held in the frame of the project “Knowledge Exchange and Academic Cultures in Humanities: Europe and the Black Sea Region” (KEAC-BSR) under the EU research and innovation framework programme (RISE), Horizon 2020.
The target group comprised the Doctoral and Master’s students and Professors from BSU and other project member institutions from Azerbaijan, Moldova, Russia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. The aim of the summer school was to analyse and discuss the civilizing mission and the crucial role of translation in development of science in the Black Sea countries.
The agenda included presentations by professors of humanities and practicing translators (M. Aroshidze, T. Siradze, G. Masalkin, Z. Bezhanov, N. Aroshidze, N. Mazmishvili), as well as round table discussions on the following topics:
- Civilizing Mission of Translation in the Black Sea Region.
- Scientific and Technical Translation and Channeling Professional Information
- Translation and Knowledge Transfer. Why Literary Translation Matters (Role of Literary Translation)
- Translation as a Variety of Cross-Cultural Communication (Language – Culture – Science – Translation)
- Sociolinguistic and Philosophical Aspects of Translation (Society – Science – Translation) in the Black Sea Region
- Simultaneous and Consecutive Translation as Real-life Communication at International Scientific Conferences, Adequacy and Accuracy in Translation and the Respective Master Class
The presentations were followed by the respective discussions on the issues such as “the challenges of scientific translation”, “the role of translation as component of the ‘fourth Industrial Revolution”, “the quality of translations”, and the final days were closed with a round table discussion on “Multilingualism and the Role of Translation in Knowledge Globalisation”, as well as with awarding certificates to the participants.
The format of the sessions and the delivery of the presentations encouraged the participants to actively engage them in discussions as well as in making their own contribution. This interaction between the presenters and the audience became the highlight of the sessions for it made the summer school diverse and thought provoking. The guest students and professors offered interesting vision of the following issues in their own presentations:
- Problems of Translating Philosophical Texts by Eugen Puntus (Moldova);
- Pragmatic Aspects of Translating Scientific Literature and Development of Anthropology by Dina Tarna (Moldova);
- Translator’s False-friends in Slavic Languages by Jane Josifovski;
- Translation and its Varieties in Cross-Cultural Communication in Media Space of the Balkans by Kristian Kovachev (Bulgaria);
- Translation and Computer Language by Igor Dudkin (Russia);
- New Challenges and their Solutions in Translation by Ia Khasaia (Georgia)
- Cultural and Historical Peculiarity of the Translation as a Palympsest by Biliana Ristovska-Josifovska (Macedonia);
- Role of Scientific Translation in Scientific Research by Stavros Parastatov and Alla Kondrasheva (Russia).
- Students Olga Dronova, Aida Samurzaeva, and Daniel Laur developed a group challenge in translation activities in the form of a game and psychological association fun activity.
The organizing committee included M. Aroshidze, T. Siradze, T. Putkaradze, M. Loria, E. Makaradze, N. Aroshidze with the support of the BSU administration.
